Chromatic Boundary 30” x 30” Acrylic on Canvas 2008
Artist Statement
My art is an expression of my response to the power and mystery of the natural world. I am attracted equally to the strength of shapes and to the negative spaces where shapes intersect. Whether I use an image of an actual place as my inspiration, or begin by loosely pouring paint onto a surface, the final work always has a connection to nature.
My current series, "Fault Lines", builds on my previous work, including the body of realistic watercolours completed since 2004, and the "Elements" series of pure abstract acrylic paintings completed in 2007. "Fault Lines" combines pure abstract forms with realistic imagery to document the decaying boundary between civilization and nature.
The natural world is infinite, and will continue in an endless cycle of growth and change long after we are gone and our artifacts have disintegrated. If I am able to draw from the viewer a recognition of the beauty of this conflict, then my work is successful.
