Baba 33H x 33W x 23D” (life size) Burlap & Winterstone 2007
Artist statement
Roger Golden's subject is the human form, and he focuses on people who live outside the mainstream. He tells their stories to demonstrate that they, too, enrich our lives.
Most of his sculptures are life size, and are made from burlap and Winterstone (a Canadian, cement-like product). These humble materials allow him to create fluid, gesture-like sculptures that are strong yet extremely lightweight.
He has developed his own methods and materials, and the resulting sculptures are unique. Works can also be cast in bronze or other metals and materials. Commissions are welcomed.
Background
Roger studied at the Toronto School of Art, and his work has appeared in numerous group shows in the city, as well as in public spaces. He is represented by Ben Navaee Gallery and is a member of the International Sculpture Center in New Jersey, USA. He has been invited by an international jury to exhibit at the Florence Biennale, the largest contemporary art fair in the world, December 5 to 13, 2009, in Florence, Italy.
